ABI: Bluetooth chip shipments will reach 2 billion in 2014

According to the latest data released by the well-known market research company ABI Research recently, it is expected that in 2014, the global Bluetooth chip shipments will approach 2 billion. Half of the chips will be used in wireless mobile phone products. At the same time, Wi-Fi chip shipments will reach 1.5 billion that year, and more than one-third of them will be used in mobile phones.

According to foreign media reports, Philip Solis, the practice director of ABI Research, said that the average sales price of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips continued to decline, driving the continuous increase in shipments of these two products. The new technology of wireless network direct connection (Wi-Fi Direct) can enable electronic products such as computers, cameras and mobile phones to directly communicate through Wi-Fi instead of having to connect through traditional wireless network platforms as now. With the help of this technology, the Wi-Fi market can be greatly expanded. On the other hand, manufacturers are increasingly connecting Bluetooth with other technologies such as FM radio, GPS, Wi-Fi and so on. The integration of Bluetooth and other technologies in the same chipset can help reduce costs and also save space for expensive devices such as mobile phones. By 2014, 70% of mobile phones and 83% of netbooks worldwide will support Bluetooth.

In addition, ABI Research also noted that Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) will also be used by more manufacturers.
